Seismic engineers and psychologists from the University of British Columbia teamed up with a visual artist to show what a Vancouver elementary school would look like after a major earthquake. The study sought to find out if seeing a visual representation of an earthquake’s impact had a greater effect on the likelihood of people to support seismic upgrades, when compared to being shown earthquake statistics alone.

UBC falls outside the City of Vancouver’s jurisdiction and as a result, the university is responsible for the types of services most universities typically don’t manage — including staffing and sourcing their own emergency response operations (with the exception of police, fire and ambulance).
